Bio

My name is Gail Barker, and I warmly welcome you to our school. I am Australian, born in Tasmania but have lived and worked most of my life in the state of Queensland. My experience as a Primary School Principal extends over twenty years. Prior to my appointment as Head of Primary at AISB I held the position of Head of Campus at a large Preparatory to Year 12 College, north of Brisbane, a campus of almost 3000 students and their families. Previously I have worked in a range of schools including an Aboriginal community school. I find working in a school of this size offer professional and personal satisfaction as it allows me to connect with children, parents and staff. I enjoy my role at AISB immensely where the diversity of staff, students and families contribute to an exciting professional learning community. I work closely with the Director and the Senior Teacher at the Soi 20 campus. My educational responsibilities extend from Foundation right up to Year 8. The school is going through a very exciting phase of its development and I am very happy to be part of the team taking the school forward to into it next phase of growth. This year we have been re-calibrating our school curriculum to ensure currency and alignment with the latest Australian curriculum while meeting the learning needs of our international students. The major focus has been creating Humanities and Social Sciences units form the Foundation Year through to Year 8. This work utilises inquiry based learning to develop student skills in the critical, creative and collaborative thinking required for the 21st century living. An increased focus on Digital and Design technology which has been built into the curriculum will be delivered at our new purpose built Innovation Centre.
